Footnotes of an Ornament

Rather than anecdotal, marginal, or ancillary notes, the content and composition of this performance expose and complicate the essential foundations of thought and spirit that make the gallery and its operations. As part of an expanded, embodied practice that sees us working off-site throughout 2014 — at the upcoming Counterpulse space, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and the Oakland Museum / SF MoMA — this performance acts both as an additional point of production and a break in an errant continuity. Thus far committed to staging exhibitions, events, and public programs; creating ephemera, books, and physical spaces; and encouraging varied patronage and economies of production, n/a looks to footnotes as an informal archive to those activities and a new instantiation of its practice.

Recognizing n/a as a set of constitutive gestures, Footnotes.. approaches the AIRSPACE residency as a means of extending its practice through contextual markers.

In three parts, loosely oriented toward the past, present and future, the pieces that compose footnotes revive, display and produce a-historical underpinnings for n/a, revealing something of the hopes, ambitions, concerns, ideas and processes that underlay a project deeply ingrained within a set of personal practices:

  • An object concerned with physical exchange and intimacy, historical transgression, commitment and breaks of continuity.
  • A film concerned with the discursive subjective-theoretical underpinnings of the project, that utilizes text from a variety of sources alongside historical and newly written material, in a time-based presentation.
  • A soundtrack concerned with direction/curation as a process, negotiation, and exchange.
